Challenged Based Learning - Semester 2

This semester, Year 6 will be exploring the new Geography Syllabus through the Challenge Based Learning (CBL) framework.  CBL is an engaging multidisciplinary approach to teaching and learning that encourages learners to leverage the technology they use in their daily lives to solve real-world problems. Challenge Based Learning is collaborative and hands-on, asking students to work with peers, teachers, and experts in their communities and around the world to ask good questions, develop deep subject area knowledge, identify and solve challenges, take action, and share their experience.  You can read more about CBL here.

Year 6 will be focusing on the Big Idea of INTERCONNECTEDNESS.

Our Essential Question is: How is Australia connected to other parts of the world?

Our Challenge is: Use our INTERCONNECTEDNESS to help others in our global community.

Together we have viewed a proposal movie, which you can view here, around the big idea of Interconnectedness to use as a springboard into our inquires.

Year 6 have been thinking hard about the big idea and have brainstormed meaningful questions about Australia's connections with the world.  We look forward to a rich and rewarding final semester of primary school, where Year 6 students are able to work together to enact real change for the better in our world.

Challenge Based Learning Semester 1

Last semester 6W explored our History unit around Australian Colonies through the platform of Challenge Based Learning.  CBL is an initiative of Apple Education that uses technology in real ways to identify needs in our communities and take action to meet those needs.

Our big idea for Semester One was Tolerance.

We explored what tolerance means and the essential question of how British colonisation of Australia shaped our views of people from different cultures.

After much research about the different cultures that contributed to shaping our nation, and how people from those cultures were treated when they first came to Australia in the 1800s, we explored ways to meet the challenge How can we increase tolerance towards people from other cultures in our Northern Beaches community?

6W students worked in groups to contribute to a class Weebly (website) as a solution to this challenge.

Please visit the website to explore the findings of our 6W students.  We hope the website will help get you thinking about the wonderful contributions that people from a variety of cultures have made to the multicultural Australia that we are today.

You can visit the site here http://culturaltoleranceonthenorthernbeaches.weebly.com/ or click on the link to the left under 'Our Favourite Websites'.
